Winners of Wikimedia’s international photo contest Wiki Loves Bangla 2024 (or Banglar Preme Wiki 2024) have been announced. Organized by Bangla WikiMoitree as part of the Bangla Culture and Heritage Collation Program, a collaborative effort between Wikimedia Bangladesh and West Bengal Wikimedians User Group, this month-long competition was held from 15 January to 14 February 2024. The main goal of this contest was to capture and enrich the cultural tapestry and heritage of Bengal through the art of photography. The first edition aims to encourage people to capture photos highlighting the global diversity of Bengali cuisine and put them under a free license, which can then be re-used not only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone. In 2024, the contest attracted significant participation with over 2,100 images of Bengali food and culture from 212 participants, reflecting the enthusiastic engagement with the initiative. This competition has substantially enriched Wikimedia Commons with a wealth of Bengali food photos, which will greatly enhance the illustration of Wikipedia articles in the future.
Bengali Wikipedia (bn.wikipedia.org), the world's largest Bengali language free encyclopedia, has marked its 20th anniversary. Bengali Wikipedia, the only free online encyclopedia written in Bengali, officially started its journey on January 27, 2004.
In a celebration of International Open Access Week, Wikimedia Bangladesh recently hosted an editathon on Bangla Wikipedia. This event, aligned with the global celebration of International Open Access Week, occurring annually during the last full week of October, focuses on the culture of accessibility to information.
Lane Rasberry’s journey with the Wikimedia movement has been almost a decade. Currently, Lane is the Wikimedia-in-Residence at the Data Science Institute of the University of Virginia. Lane has also been involved with a good number of studies related to the impact of Wikipedia projects in the academic sector. In 2013, Lane visited Bangladesh, so his attachment with the Bengali projects is old as well!
নোয়াখালীর হাতিয়া উপজেলায় অবস্থিত নিঝুম দ্বীপ থেকে ছবিটি তুলেছেন সুলতান আহমেদ নিলয় যা সিসি-বাই-এসএ ৪.০ লাইসেন্সের আওতায় প্রকাশিত। এই ছবিটি নির্বাচিত দশটি ছবির মধ্যে তৃতীয় স্থান লাভ করেছে। নিলয় এক শীতের সকালে নিঝুম দ্বীপে হরিণের সন্ধানে যাওয়ার সময় এই অসাধারণ দৃশ্যটি ধারণ করেন।
উইকিমিডিয়া বাংলাদেশ আয়োজিত উইকিপিডিয়ার আন্তর্জাতিক ছবি প্রতিযোগিতা ‘উইকি লাভস আর্থ ২০২০’ (ডব্লিউএলই)-এর বাংলাদেশ অংশের বিজয়ী নির্বাচন করা হয়েছে। এ বছর বাংলাদেশ থেকে ৩০৪ জন অংশগ্রহণকারী মোট ১৮৯৪ টি ছবি জমা দিয়েছিলেন। বিজয়ী এই ১০টি আলোকচিত্র আন্তর্জাতিক অঙ্গনে বাংলাদেশের প্রতিনিধিত্ব করবে।

দেশের সংরক্ষিত প্রাকৃতিক বনাঞ্চল ও এর জীববৈচিত্র্যের ছবি নিয়ে বাংলাদেশে চতুর্থবারের মতো শুরু হচ্ছে ছবি প্রতিযোগিতা ‘উইকি লাভস আর্থ ২০২০’ (ডব্লিউএলই)। আন্তর্জাতিক প্রতিযোগিতাটি এ বছর ৩২টি দেশে অনুষ্ঠিত হচ্ছে।
